The Institution - Signature Location - 1/12/2011
Searching for a massive gothic structure? Look no further than The Institution. Now vacant, the former Weston State Hospital (which followed a Kirkbride architectural format), is one of the largest hand-cut stone masonry buildings in the United States and was previously recognized as a National Historic Landmark. A psychiatric hospital from 1864 to 1994, the 242,000 square foot facility sits on a 300-acre tract, is graced by a central clock tower, and maintains an eerie quality throughout. Its sandstone walls are 2-1/2 feet thick and backed throughout by brick; the interior floors are reinforced concrete. There are 921 windows, 906 doors, and a full basement, with dirt floor, which runs the entire length of the structure. A Victorian wrought iron fence, installed in 1892, runs along its front and northern sides. A privately owned facility, requests for use must be made in advance.
